This course explores China's Communist era under Chairman Mao (1949-76) and the period of rapid economic growth that followed. Topics to be covered include the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, the 1989 Tiananmen Movement, urban-rural inequality, the environment, and the One-Child Policy.
